What a depressing Spring! After returning from a week in Las Vegas, these sub-zero temperatures are just too much for me! We will, as always, make the best of it in Room 116. We have a busy week planned as we return to routine.
This week, I plan to revisit the routines of the Daily 5. During our outstanding work in this year's Heritage Fair, we lost some serious ground with regards to the ways that we have learned to run a successful Language Arts program.
We will also begin a new unit in math, focused on Geometry. We will be learning about, and categorizing all sorts of 3D solids and 2D polygons based on many different attributes. This is a great unit of study, but the biggest challenge by far is vocabulary. We will be using words like parallel, perpendicular, quadrilateral, vertices, and many more, so it can be a bit of a challenge for some students to keep these straight. We'll take it slow, though. After all, it's their ability to show that they have learned skills and concepts that's most important, not neccesarily their inability to memorize the vocabulary. Still, it might be a good support if you see an interesting shape around town (2D or 3D) to ask your child to tell you about it's attributes!
