This Monday, the baseball world celebrates a pioneer of the sport - the great Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson was the first African American man to play professional baseball in the major leagues. Last year on this day, my class went outside and played a game of baseball ourselves, but I didn't plan for that this year. On Monday, in honour of Jackie, every MLB player will be wearing the number 42 with no names on their jerseys. This is a way of showing respect to a man who tolerated so much racism and hatred in order to open the door for people of all ethnicities in sports.
As well, this week is all about the written word. We have a guest presentation by Saskatchewan author Arthur Slade, who will tell us about his recent publications and how he approaches the craft of writing. On Tuesday, we continue with our "Paragraph of the Week" (POTW) project in which the students are assigned one paragraph prompt to write about. They must use a clear structure, provide plenty of support, and make editorial changes to their conventions. Finally, Thursday marks the Room 116 tradition of "Poem in Your Pocket Day." On this day, students from my class come to school with a poem that they will use to do impromptu readings of at school. Sure, we will read to each other, but the real fun is when you can practice ambush poetry on the playground at recess!
Should be a fun and busy week in 116!
