Learning about Residential Schools - by Luke

Today we brought our "first day of school" pictures to class for Social Studies.  We were learning about how some First Nations children were taken to Christian residential schools. They were taught things ling English and how to "act like a gentleman".  Some of them were beaten and had their feelings hurt a lot.  They weren't able to see their parents very often, and many of them were told that their beliefs and culture were evil.

If it were me, I would have tried to escape from the school because I would want to stay with my culture, not somebody else's.  When Thomas Moore got to school for the first time he was dressed in beads and colourful hides, but a year later he looked really different.  He was dressed in a shirt and tie and his hair was cut short.  This would change how I thought about my culture.  I feel good that we don't have residential schools in Canada any more.
